One of the challenges of online campaigning is that it often leaves out those who don’t have internet access — in the developing world, this includes the vast majority of the rural and urban poor. So campaigns related to human rights and poverty alleviation end up being about those who are urban and connected speaking on behalf of the disadvantaged. what are the challenges and possiblities for reversing this potentially paternalistic situation and enabling the disadvanted to use online tools to advocate for themselves? This workshop will draw on Video Volunteers‘ extensive experience in community media in India, in which the disadvantaged are trained to create content and control campaign messaging. It will look at how other NGOs can incorporate some of the best practices of campaigning and incorporate them in their own work.
